Sustainable sourced and environmental certified value-added production of seaweed

About us

Founded in 2016

isea - Icelandic Seaweed was founded at the beginning of 2016 with the aim of designing and building a seaweed harvester boat that met all the requirements for safety and sustainability in the collection of algae under the conditions in Breiðafjörður.

In August 2017, Sigri 9057 was launched in Stykkishólmur. Multiple measures of sustainability have been made and it passes all requirements. Sigri has all the required permits for harvesting seaweed in the coast of Iceland.

At the beginning of 2022, there were changes in the group of shareholders and from that time the production of isea started on sustainable harvest and the production of quality materials from algae.

Our vision

Our vision is to be the leading company in Iceland in sustainable harvested seaweed processed using geothermal heat and green energy into value-added environmental certified products.

The opportunity

Keen to enter into cooperation of more processed products, initially starting with dried seaweed and products for animal feed. There has been a great improvement in technology to produce the liquid we include in our product development.

Seaweed (macroalgae) provides a range of product applications

Animal feed
Food
Pharmaceuticals
Nutraceuticals
Valorisation of ecosystem services
Additives
Bio packaging
Cosmetics
Biostimulants
Biofuels

“Sustainable Seaweed is Europe's next hidden champion. We are only starting to understand the value of seaweed as a climate-friendly source of food, feed or biomaterial.”

Martin R. Stuchtey, Co-Founder of SYSTEMIQ and former Director of the McKinsey Center for Business and Enviroment.

Harvesting

The algae flora

isea algae processing is not limited to one type of algae, but isea plans to continue to develop collection and processing, conduct product development with the algae flora that grows or will be raised in Breiðafjörður and can be harvested in a sustainable way.

Algae is the most important consumer of CO2 on our planet, 1 kilogram of algae biomass is able to store around 2 kilograms of CO2 while simultaneously releasing 1.6 kilograms of oxygen.

The team

isea is owned by three families each bringing their expertise into the project. The founders with good technical knowledge in sourcing and production, the “locals” with ownership in land and connections within the community and the entrepreneurs with know how and connections into environmental certified food production.
